UOSS, Special Coi respondent m Your correspondent visited tho "Arks of the Sanctified" one day this week, Tho band arrived at Cannon's Ferry, Cliowan county, on the thirteenth in- stnnt. They have since latt Fall been or ganizing on tho Kustern stioro of Vir ginia ami in the lower SuuuJa of this State. They tmvel and have their living juartors on large barges, called arks. They arc towed from place to place by small sloops, but one of tho men in- loriued me that tho Band is now negotiating tho purchase of a small steam The Arks are Gfty feet in length and ubuut twenty five feet in width. They are built of ceiling timber, and aro fitted with bunks, sitting rooms, dining rooms, and all modem conveniences. I bad a talk with the Chief Mogul this fin dcsciclc liiighain Young who is rjuite a good looking, athletic fellow about forty live years of age, with a line head uiaucd with dark chestnut hair, slightly streaked with gray, lie is by far the most intelligent man on board, and is quite nn interesting personality. Though he claims to be sanctified, be ihews tobacco aud bus every appearance of the ordinary human. The Band consists of one hundred and throe members all ages, all Bizes, all sexes, and ol all sorts and conditions. They arc living on the Arks at present, but it is repotted that somo of tlicm have rented bouses of Mr. in Kuson aud Dilluid Hoyee, K., to live in during their stay at tho Ferry. It is quite likely that fish will be scarce in a short while, fur they have the river lined with nets and eel baskets fishing being oue of their chief occupations. They have a largo supply of provisions on hand, and iiuite a number of fine, althy porks have quarters on deck. Socially they are like one large family only a little more so; mentally they are rank?; morally, they claim p.rfeclion. The day of my visit was wash day. One buxom lass-whotii I heard addressed K la" seemed to have had charge of the laundry operations, and the steady swifh s.wi:.h" of the water as it passed over tho board, was a proof of her eneray. Once she looked in my direction and caught a glimpse of two rosy cceeks and a pair t.f ruugisli brown eyes, which looked far too ejpresMvc and intelligent for their owner lo be ekeing out an existence over a wasbtub even if sho is sanctified 1 The women weir loose lilting garments for the most part, while some are attired very neatly. The children are happy, the women contented, the men good natured and iudulent. But they are harmless; they simply believe they are sinless as pure as the Man of Nazareth. The keen stroke of the surgeon's blade along tho slender nerves, shooting cur rents uf agony to every liber and torturing every muscle, causes tho physically bravest of us to quail, even when it is vitally necessary to undergo tho pain, and something like Spartan coursgo ia needed when one volutitarily goes through with iho experieuee solely for another's sake. Dr. Jaruigan tells a story, and it is out of his own professional experience that has for its heroine a woman who did this bravely unselfish thing. Her husband's arm had been crushed in the machinery. Tho hard folds of muscle had been flattened and the bone had been crushed. Tho arm, bruised aud discolored, was bad enough to look upon, but it gave no indication of the excruciating torture of pain the man had to undergo. It was thought at first by the doctors that his arm would have to couie off the good right nrm that supported tho brave wife who stood by his side and the serious, anxious faced children who stood looking on. lie begged them to savo bis aim, and his wife begged them, and fortunately the condition of the case permitted them to. But the arm did not heal The skio loughed away from the wounded surface and left it raw and sore. Tho doctors saw that it was necessary to graft portions of skin to the service to bring about a euro. They told tho sick man of it and they bared his side to cut off thu strips of skin to put over the raw arm. The blade flashed into the man's side, the blood spurted out and with a moan tho man fell over in a faint, sickened by tho pain. His wife had been watching r sympathetic heart touched to its pths by the sight of her busbaud's suffering. "Doctor, don't do that again," she gged. "Don't cut him any more. He is too weak and has suffered too much. Cut it off inc. Won't that do?" The doctors told her that it would. She c tolly bared her arm and told them ho was ready. The razor edge blade sunk into the flesh and went ripping own, followed by a tiny fountain of blood. She did not wince. Dexterously xpi rtly the doctors slit out a piece of kin and grafted over the man's arm. Another and another piece was cut out until in ire than a dozen had been re moved aud all the while the Spartan woman remained standing watcbiug the swift flah of the knife, the springing of the warm blood, ard tho sickeuiug spec tacle without shrinking once. The husband's arm, grafted over with kin taken from his wife's arm, is now well, and tho arm of the bravo woman is fast healing up, leaving many lung scars, that will ever bear evidence to the hero ism of her love. It was an amusing case of the biter bit thai took place on a Walnut street car lust evening. A number of passengers were standing, among them being two young men, who faced a very pretty girl comfortably seated at their elbows. One of the young men was attracted by the pretty face and was apparently soon determined upon a campaign of conquest. As he could not attract her attention in any other manner, he evidently resolved to do it by touching her toe with his foot. To his delisiht the touch of his shoe was returned with a light Up, and I'm two blocks he kept up this novel form of flirtation. Finally tho girl rose to get off, and the young mail who had not previously figured in the mailer, who proved to be the pretty damsel's escort, turned follow her from the car. "Sec here, yuu blanked idiot," ho remarked to ihe would be masher before he stopped from his place in the aisle, "it has been my foot you have been tapping, not my lady friend's. If you will come out on the street I'll try and return ibe compliment by tapping your face," The masher was too badly confused by the litter uf laughter that passed through the car to respond, but he recovered bis self composure sufficiently to leave the car a safe distance away from the eornir at which his challenger got off. "That a severe light uing storm is terrifying admits of no ques tion, and will sometimes briug uneasi ness to the heart of the strongest man. But the real danger is slight. The chance of lightning striking a house, fur example, is nut une in a uiilliou. Par ticularly is this true iu cities, strum; as most of them aro with electric wires. The greatest danger from electric storms is in il:e i mntry, and even there the danger may be lessened if tho simplest an 1 most sensible of precautions are exereised. Tho surest electric con ductor is a diaught, and if when a thun der norm approaches it is seen that all windows and doors liable to occasion diaugbl are kept closed, Ihe danger is at once reduced to a miniiuutu. It a woman is "caught" out in a thuuder storm the safest shelter is a house; the most dauger ous a tree, part ieularly an oak tree. It is peculiar, but nevertheless a proven fact, that Ihe oak is the most susceptible of all trees to a current of electricity Over 50 per cent, of the trees struck by lightning storms during une summer, the government statistician tells us, were while the beech tree was the least harmed, Therefore, the worst possible place of shelter iu an cleetrio storm is under an oak tree, while by all odds the safest place is in a house and out of a draught. The actual danger from an electric storm is, in truth, not from the liehtning nor the I homier, hut fiom ihe nervoui condition into which women al nw themselves to fall. And this is dancer which they can avoid. A little calm thoueht and a few grains of com mon sense will do it. (live me a trial when in need of anv- thiiiK. my 7 ly.
